If you're looking for a melt-in-your mouth, cakey cookie, chocolate crinkle cookies are for you.
These cookies are easy to make and bake. Lightly crisp on the outside and perfectly soft on the inside, crinkles are some of my favorites!
I first made these years ago on my other blog, adapted from a Sesame Street cookbook, and have loved them ever since.
why are they called crinkle cookies?
Crinkle cookies are rolled in powdered sugar before they are baked, so as the cookies bake, cracks form and puff, separating the powdered sugar. Hence, the sugar appears "crinkled."
when were chocolate crinkle cookies invented?
Chocolate Crinkle Cookies were invented by Helen Fredell in St. Paul, Minnesota in the early half of the 20th Century. The cookies are included in Betty Crocker's “Cooky Carnival," with the note: "When we went to see Mrs. Fred Fredell's in St. Paul, Minnesota, these cookies were so delicious we got the recipe."

You will need:
BUTTER
While the standard is to use unsalted butter when baking, I personally prefer salted. I feel it gives an extra depth to the cookies.
I use the Land O' Lakes brand.
Butter should be slightly softened but still cold.
SUGAR
You’ll need some good old-fashioned granulated sugar.
LIGHT OR DARK BROWN SUGAR
Be sure to pack brown sugar into the measuring cup with the back of your spoon!
EGG
Use two large eggs for this recipe.
VANILLA EXTRACT
Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. I prefer pure extract, not imitation flavoring.
FLOUR
All-purpose flour is used in this recipe.
UNSWEETENED COCOA POWDER
For this recipe, choose unsweetened cocoa powder, like the Hershey’s Brand. (As opposed to Dutch-processed cocoa powder.)
SALT
Never forget your salt in cookies! You will notice. Salt keeps away the bland.
BAKING SODA
Baking soda will give your cookies rise.
CONFECTIONER'S SUGAR
Confectioner’s sugar is also known as powdered sugar or icing sugar. This is the sugar you'll roll the cookie dough in.
Tools you’ll need
how long do crinkle cookies last?
